Feeding Each Other
There’s a story I love that begins in the early morning hours with a group of fishermen on the sea. They had a tough time of it through the night. No fish in their net as morning comes, they heed the advice of their friend who’s appeared on the shore, and calls out to them to try casting their nets on the other side of the boat.
The advice works, and the fishermen end up with a giant net full of fish. All the while, their friend on the beach is preparing nourishment for the crew, so that when they come to shore, bringing some of the fish they’ve just caught as well, they find a fire with fish and bread roasting. I can practically smell and taste the scene—early morning air, sea lapping at the shore, fire crackling and sending up the smell of warm smoke, freshly caught fish, and bread warming. In the words of my stepfather, what a feast!
